Ankara in style
Ankara is an African fabric(native wear) that comes mostly colourful and sometimes in plain colours. It seems to have taken over naija streets like a hurricane. It has become so popular that most events i.e. weddings, funerals, birthdays, etc have it as aso ebi(dress code). Looking back at the late 80s and even into the late 90s, Ankara was regarded as a fabric for the poor or probably for mourning. Only the lace fabric was seen as good enough for the rich and elite. Even the suppliers of this beautiful fabric don’t seem to be able to keep up with the request of the ever party lovers of lagos metropolis. This fabric known as Ankara is been worn in different styles. From the conventional iro and buba(top and wrapper) to mono straps and even tube dresses amongst many others designs for the women while the men have a twist to their outfits. Taking it from the regular over sized sokoto ,buba and agbada to a perfectly fitted buba and boot-cut pants which I will term bespoke.
Ankara has even been imbibed into the very formal sectors as a dress down outfit on Friday. The love for Ankara as spread so much that it is now been made with beautiful designs on them, then exported abroad and sold to Nigerians in diasporas and even the foreigners that have an eye for this beautiful fabric.
Is seems the Ankara fabrics have come to stay and promote this blessed continent called Africa and its pieces can be found in various stores all over the country and its price range varies, depending on your budget, thereby giving everyone a chance to look smashingly beautiful in them. So come on, explore………..
